Why did Zayo acquire Viatel?
Zayo has built its global communications infrastructure through a series of acquisitions and follow-on organic growth. This acquisition, our 35th, provides highly complementary fibre assets across Europe, solidifying our position as a Pan-European provider. The acquisition provides our combined base of customers with expanded connectivity and capabilities.
Who is Viatel?
Viatel is a telecommunications company, providing connectivity solutions for European enterprise, public sector, wholesale and carrier customers. The company delivers data, cloud, managed services and voice solutions. Like Zayo, it is directly connected to the largest content distribution networks, internet peering exchanges, public cloud platforms, and Internet companies globally.
How much network capability will the acquisition add to Zayo’s network?
The acquisition adds approximately 8,400 fibre kilometres to Zayo’s fibre footprint — extending our network to nearly 150,000 kilometres (92,000 miles) in the U.S. and Europe. A significant portion of Viatel’s network is intercity in nature, traversing throughout France and extending into Belgium, the Netherlands, Germany, Switzerland and Italy.
The new infrastructure assets also include connectivity to two subsea cable systems, delivering traffic to and from high growth regions, including Asia and Africa.
What other capabilities will the acquisition provide?
Viatel brings dense fibre networks into 12 metro markets, including deep fibre in London, Paris, Dublin, Frankfurt, Amsterdam, Rotterdam, Dusseldorf, Utrecht and Montpellier. The transaction also includes data centres in the UK, Belgium, Switzerland, the Netherlands and Germany.
Does Viatel have any data centres?
The transaction adds seven Viatel data centres in European markets as well as connectivity to 81 on-net buildings. With the new data centres, Zayo now operates 52 data centres in the U.S. and Europe.
What does this acquisition mean for customers?
Both Viatel customers and Zayo customers will benefit from the expanded reach and capabilities of Zayo’s network and infrastructure, enhancing their opportunities for growth and competitiveness.
The product mix between the two companies is highly complementary, including dark fibre and a range of high-performance transport and infrastructure services. Customers can also use Zayo’s innovative Tranzact platform to access the global network and product mix for a comprehensive solution and speed-to-market advantage.

Zayo’s international leadership team will manage Zayo’s international operations.
