Thought Leadership at Capacity Europe

Each year, Capacity Europe provides an opportunity for telecom and communications infrastructure providers to come together to talk about the events and trends shaping the industry. The largest carrier event in Europe, the 2018 conference attracted more than 2,500 participants from 90 countries to London.

Zayo was well represented, taking advantage of the forum to talk with customers and partners about a variety of topics, including recent metro fiber expansions in London, Paris, Dublin and Amsterdam.

Zayo leaders Annette Murphy, managing director — Europe and Phil Mottram, Chief Customer Officer were featured on general session panels. Annette was joined by representatives from Telstra, Oracle, Facebook, TalkTalk Business and Women in Telecoms & Technology-UK to discuss empowering women who work in telco.

At Zayo, diversity comes from the top and is a strategic lever to drive better decisions and business perspectives through men and women from different ethnic backgrounds. “The debate is about removing (implicit) bias,” Murphy said.

Zayo has worked hard to facilitate inclusiveness, creating a work environment where differences are valued. In some areas and functions, such as technical roles in France and across all roles in our global headquarters in Boulder, Colorado, women are near or above parity. The challenge is to extend best practices across the global organization.

As a panelist on a mergers and acquisitions panel, Phil Mottram and leaders from GTT,  Tofane Global, Aggelia and Cambridge Management Consulting, shared perspectives on industry and financial trends in telecom. The panel discussed the demand for fiber: the growing trend toward cloud adoption for hosting, apps and as-a- service offerings. Both cloud providers and companies that connect to the cloud rely on fiber-based connectivity. They also discussed recent M&A activity globally, with a focus on growing valuations over recent years.
