BOULDER, Colo. – June 11, 2013 – Zayo Group today announced a partnership with Gigabit Squared, the architects of next-generation networks across the U.S., to deploy gigabit Chicago dark fiber and wireless in the city’s Mid-South Side. Zayo’s fiber deployment will serve as the backbone for the Gigabit Chicago project (www.gigabit-chicago.com), which is creating a gigabit community within Chicago, bringing with it the social and economic opportunities that ultra-fast broadband provides citizens and businesses.
A recent recipient of an Illinois Gigabit Communities Challenge award, Gigabit Squared received an investment of $2 million from the State to help support its national Gigabit Neighborhood Gateway Program (GNGP) to help create jobs, improve neighborhood safety, enhance education, and improve health care services.
Gigabit Squared and Zayo will develop a fiber infrastructure to provides citizens and businesses with gigabit Internet connectivity. The resulting high bandwidth capabilities will support economic development as well as improvements in education, health care, safety and energy solutions as the program is adopted and grows to support emerging broadband applications.
“Chicago is the first community of development and Zayo will work with Gigabit Squared to enable other communities in the future.” says Matt Erickson, President of Fiber and Infrastructure at Zayo Group. “We will be leveraging the reach of our metro Chicago fiber network to enable the Gigabit Chicago project.”
“Building a gigabit community in a cost-effective manner requires a lot of collaboration, leveraging existing assets and services, as well as the right partners to help make the dream a reality,” explained Mark Ansboury, president of Gigabit Squared.
Zayo will provide dark fiber, colocation, IP Transit, wavelength, and other infrastructure services in support of the Gigabit Chicago project.
