Position Description

The Sr UNIX Systems Engineer ensures the stability, integrity and efficiency of Information Technology infrastructure, which consists of servers, operating systems, applications, databases, files, security and storage systems. Duties include researching, designing, developing, building, maintaining, supporting and optimizing key areas of enterprise-wide technology infrastructure.  This position must also implement security best practices and disaster recovery procedures necessary to protect these entities and the data contained within them. The Systems Engineer Sr. also requires frequent communication and coordination with other Information Technology staff members, including but not limited to mentoring other team members, training sessions, and project management.


  • Configuration, installation, operation and maintenance of hardware and software related to the IT infrastructure
  • Configuration, installation, operation and maintenance of applications, databases and servers, including virtual environments, specialized servers and hardware appliances
  • Administration and support of the following systems (but not limited to):
  • Linux operating systems including RedHat and Centos
  • Solaris operating systems
  • Multi-tenant virtualization including VMWare ESX/ESXi and KVM.
  • Enterprise-class anti-virus, anti-spam, and anti-spyware products
  • Server monitoring, management, and patch deployment tools
  • Windows Server operating systems
  • Provide project management and project leadership. Develop project plans and timelines. Manage work to meet deadlines. Take the lead/assist in prioritization of work, escalation of issues, and development of contingency plans.  Facilitate meetings and work sessions. Conduct post project reviews.
  • Will act as a technology evangelist by bringing in new ideas and technology
  • Seeking out, recommending and employing new and relevant technologies
  • Ensure system performance & availability by monitoring space, CPU usage, RAM, network usage and other performance monitors as required
  • Server and file level security, including the development, recommendation and implementation of security solutions
  • Provide status updates to the end-user community and IT management as needed due to complexity level of project, issue or irregularity
  • Configuration, operation and verification of data backups on servers and network devices
  • Responsible for the data management policies, adherence and monitoring
  • Participate in the creation and maintenance of documentation, policies, procedures and standards, as well as improving existing business processes
  • Provide mentoring and training of other staff members
  • Respond to Help Desk and end user service requests within established department guidelines
  • Provide 24.7 support of server availability and performance issues
  • Perform other duties as assigned


  • Education, training and/or experience equivalent to a Bachelor’s degree in Information Technology or related field
  • 8 or more years of experience designing and administering production systems
  • Experience with virtual and physical hosts and operating systems
  • Experience implementing and maintaining IT-related security
  • Experience with disaster-recovery policies and procedures
  • Ability to work evenings and weekends
  • Experience within the telecommunications industry
  • Ability to anticipate and plan for information technology needs in an organization
  • Ability to work under time constraints
  • Excellent team collaboration skills
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills
  • Scripting languages such as Bash and Perl
  • Configuration management systems such as Puppet or Chef
  • Experience with network load balancers from F5
  • Solid understanding of TCP/IP and common service protocols
  • Experience with storage technologies such as NFS, iSCSI especially using NetApp filers
