Last week, Zayo announced that we would acquire Viatel’s infrastructure business. Once the transaction closes, expected by year-end, it will significantly expand our international capability, extending the network that Zayo owns and operates into eight European countries. The acquisition will increase our global footprint by 8,394 kilometers — more than 5,200 miles.
A good chunk of Viatel’s network is intercity in nature, traversing throughout France and extending into Belgium, the Netherlands, Germany, Switzerland and Italy. In addition, we will also acquire dense fiber networks in 12 metro markets, add seven new data centers and connectivity to 81 on-net buildings in Europe. The new infrastructure assets will also include connectivity to two subsea cable systems, delivering traffic to and from high growth regions, including Asia and Africa. We will leverage this new network to provide Zayo’s core suite of services, including long haul dark fiber.
Although we have had a global presence for several years, Zayo will be a much stronger international provider as a result of this acquisition. We’ve recently finalized strategic partnerships that extend our global reach, and can already provide connectivity to more than 25 countries on four continents through our Tranzact shopping platform. For our current and future customers competing in a global economy, the benefits are seamless connectivity to services, greater competitiveness, better value and unlimited growth opportunities.
Over the past eight years, Zayo has grown from a startup to one of the world’s leading providers of infrastructure solutions. It’s been quite an experience to build a diverse, talented team and work together to create amazing value from what was a blank slate. We look forward to bringing the same powerful commitment, fierce work ethic and unique startup spirit that powered our growth as we accelerate capabilities for our global customers.
