Marietta City Schools (MCS) serve some 8,000 students in eight elementary choice schools, one of which is a Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM) Magnet, one middle school, one sixth-grade school, and one high school. MCS is home to five Georgia Schools of Excellence: West Side Elementary (1985); Marietta Middle School (1987); A.L. Burruss Elementary (1991, 2003); Marietta High School (2003); Marietta Center for Advanced Academics (2011); and one National School of Excellence: A.L. Burruss Elementary (1992). The district has approximately 1200 employees. In June, 2008, Marietta City Schools became one of Georgia’s first Charter School Systems. In order to keep up their standard of excellence, MCS needed to obtain more bandwidth to support the various data applications across its employees, and its students located at all eleven sites.

Challenge
  • Need for a scalable network for growing bandwidth demand to maintain standard of excellence.

Solution

  • A full GigE to each school location through a wide area Ethernet over fiber network.

Results

  • MCS now has the ability to upgrade to 10 Gig at each site.

Zayo, a fully E-Rate compliant organization, planned to meet MCS’s need of more bandwidth by providing a high-speed, wide-area digital data network linking the hub location at the district’s central administrative office to each remote location in the school network with a minimum, full-duplex bandwidth of 1Gbps.

Zayo’s augmentation for the MCS District ensured security and reliability, as it is one of the few providers in the area that owns its fiber assets and has existing, direct connections to each of the schools. The project included the implementation of a district-wide Ethernet network providing GigE service to each school location and giving MCS the ability to upgrade to 10 Gig at each site for future growth and applications.
