Zayo Teams with Netflix on Florida Internet Exchange

BOULDER, Colo. – October 14, 2014 –  zColo, the colocation division of global Bandwidth Infrastructure provider Zayo Group, LLC (“Zayo”), announced today that it has teamed up with Netflix to become a founding member and the primary infrastructure sponsor of the new Florida Internet Exchange (FL-IX).

FL-IX, a non-profit entity pending 501(c)(6) certification, was initially announced at the North American Network Operators’ Group meeting, NANOG 62, in Baltimore today. FL-IX will be a member managed peering platform serving the South Eastern U.S. and Latin American markets and will reside in the zColo data center at 36 NE 2nd Street in Miami. Initial member participants on FL-IX include: Netflix, Zayo, Akamai, CloudFlare and Host.net and are actively seeking peers for interconnection.

“Our participation, support and sponsorship of FL-IX reflects our commitment to the Open IX model and providing greater optionality for exchanging traffic,” said Dave Temkin, director of network architecture and strategy at Netflix. “The Miami market needs more connectivity alternatives to NAP of the Americas and we anticipate FL-IX will be well received by many major content and network providers. The FL-IX exchange should also enable emerging providers to participate in this cost effective peering community. We intend on certifying the FL-IX environment with the OIX-1 standard as soon as possible.”

With the agreement, zColo will provide space, power, and underlying network connectivity to support the launch of FL-IX. Netflix will provide switching equipment and associated technology in order to run the exchange. The zColo space is well served for the FL-IX deployment as zColo will leverage its riser assets in 36 NE 2nd Street in Miami to ensure customers in other colocation facilities in the building also have easy access to FL-IX. The zColo Miami facility is currently under Open IX evaluation. Tyler Coates, the zColo Product Management team lead, will serve as zColo’s member of the FL-IX board.

“Ultra connectivity and interconnect optionality are the cornerstones of zColo’s colocation services” said Steve Finnerty, vice president of zColo sales at Zayo. “Sponsoring this new internet exchange and housing it within our carrier neutral facility further enhances the value we provide to our customers there.”
