Geo Networks Ltd (Geo) the leading dedicated fibre network provider and iomart Group plc (AIM:IOM), a leading UK provider of managed hosting and cloud computing services, celebrate winning the prestigious Global Telecoms Business (GTB) Innovation Award for ‘Fixed Network Infrastructure Innovation’.
Presented last night at a ceremony hosted by GTB, the awards recognise the most innovative projects from the international telecoms and communications industry. Geo was recognised for its project work to deliver a fully private network to match iomart Group’s private cloud infrastructure.
The project, which included the delivery of a fully dedicated 1,860km fibre optical ring connecting eight UK data centres, and the intricate integration of numerous network layers, was successfully completed in less than four months. During this time the London Olympic Game’s road works embargos were in place.
As a leading UK cloud computing and managed hosting provider, iomart’s USP has always been its physical ownership and management of its own datacentre infrastructure. In order to continue to offer its world-beating levels of service and 100% uptime guarantee, iomart made the decision to take full ownership and maintenance of its own network. Angus MacSween, CEO of iomart Group, commented: “The most important elements for the successful delivery of cloud services in the era of Big Data are network capacity, speed and connectivity. Our investment in Geo’s fibre to connect our UK data centres, means we have one of the most resilient and secure fibre networks and can take the cloud right to our customers’ front door.”
Chris Smedley, Chief Executive at Geo commented, “As the only company in the UK which leases carrier-grade dedicated fibre, Geo can provide services faster than its competitors. Our business model is different from the traditional telco model, offering our customers greater choice and flexibility.”
The GTB Innovation Award was founded by Global Telecoms Business magazine in order to reward the most exciting projects in the industry in the telecommunications space. In presenting the awards, Alan Burkitt-Gray, editor of Global Telecoms Business, commented: “This is the seventh time we’ve run our Innovation Awards and each year we’ve seen that the industry is working harder and harder to deliver exciting and innovative services to its customers worldwide. Congratulations to all the award winners. The industry is seeing a wave of innovation which is making a huge difference — to the companies working in the industry and to all of us in business and as consumers. They are making such a difference to the world. We want to celebrate what they are doing.”
